Doing a background check is a relatively unknown concept for most people. There aren’t too many scenarios that warrant digging into a person’s past to find out some intimate details on them, but there are cases. If you’re planning on marrying a person, you need to know if they have huge sums of debt that legally become your property. Maybe you need someone to do work for you, and just need to check up on them to make sure they have a clean record. Due to the power of the internet, doing a background check is relatively simple.
The traditional way of doing this, before the internet, was hiring a private investigator or business that specialized in investigating people. As you can guess, that is an expensive approach, when most people just need some archived information that is stored somewhere. The internet has made the background check a relatively painless process that is fast, easy and cheap.
Right now, there are hundreds of organizations that hold massive archives of information on their website that people can access. You just have to search through the massive database on the server and get all the information associated with a person. The most common information that you will find is their address (and history of addresses), employment, marriage records, criminal records and court appearances. Often times you’ll find a lot of extra information on things like the debt they owe.
Having access to a database to run your background check will cost you a one-time flat fee to access. There are some different plans you can pick from as well, so you can customize it to your needs. You’re not going to find an organization that is going to run a charity service, so you’ve probably ran into a scam if they claim you get things for free. You can even access the government’s database to do a background check.
That’s not to say that there isn’t a way to do a free background check. A lot of times you can search someone’s name in quotations right at Google. Including the city name outside the quotation helps as well. Obviously the more common the name, the harder it is to dig up information from Google. Typically you’ll find something, which may be useful and sometimes it isn’t. You’d be surprised how many people have a MySpace page you can get information off of.
With the internet, you have the ability to run a full background check on people that you need to know about. The results are available to you within a few minutes of your time. Try not to think of this as a sleazy or weird thing to do. Information is knowledge and can be quite useful for people that are getting married or hiring someone. Protecting yourself from someone that might have a shady past is a good thing.
