Question about background checks and criminal records?

I was convincted of a misdemeanor last year on an extremely petty offense that was basically false and very trumped up, but due to my lack of resources and knowledge about the legal system, I ended up pleading guilty of which I now regret. Does a misdeameanor stay in your record forever?? Can I appeal to get it reversed or expunged? Is there a time limit to doing so? And while its on my record, does it show up in background checks in any other states besides where the conviction occurred?? I currently live in a different state now then where it happened. Will it prevent me from finding employment or rental property? I have a perfectly clean record besides this, I have always been a very nice, law-abiding citizen, and I completed 8 years of honorable service in the armed forces before all this happened…its really unfair and wrong what happened to me but I didnt know how to fight it at the time. Now im worried about it will affect my future.
