Conducting a background search as part of employee screening has become a standard in the recent years. Government agencies can perform a criminal background check for a minimal fee. There are also some private companies that can be hired to do a background check.
But the surge in information technology made the internet a hotspot for background search due to the large amount of websites promising a free background check. Yet, does a free background check even worth your time?
Employee screening and background searches are kinds of investigative research. And in any research activity, there is a rule: you pay what you get. An online free background search might appear cost effective but when you receive the information you requested, you will find out that the report does not deliver what you expected.
Mostly, these so-called free internet background checks are just a public search of databases which are often incomplete, out of date and disorganize. If you would even wish to use such search as part of your employee screening process, you really have to sort through the information and use a keen eye and even double check data with other sources. Cost and value are two different things and it would be wise to choose what is more important.
Yet again, if you are just a person who just wants to perform a simple background search where accuracy and completeness of data is not important, then a free background check might be for you. You can even perform these checks on your own and it would give you a more productive result than relying to an inaccurate search because at least, you know where your information came from and can check for timeliness. By law, you are required to use “the best possible source” because results from a background check can have life-long impacts.
You should not be thrifty when it comes to protecting your business. To ensure the safety of your business, your employees and yourself as a business owner, you must exercise the greatest effort because at the long run, what you pay will help you reap more.
